"If We Can Help People, We Will": The Limerick Bikers Raising Thousands for Good Causes

Leather jackets, plenty of ink and a street lined with motorcycles. In Limerick, Ireland, that's what a night of charity looks like. The Limerick Leader spent an evening with the Celtic Souls Motorcycle Club, and found a group that has raised tens of thousands of euro for good causes across Limerick.

An extended family

Club president Chris Mockett, from Cappamore, founded the club in late 2018. "I started it as a way to bring families together," he told the paper. "Everyone in the club – we'd know their partners, their kids' birthdays, their partners' birthdays. It is like an extended family." Members meet monthly at Happy Days cafe on Little Catherine Street in the city centre.

Charity, decided by vote

Over the years the club has done runs for causes including Limerick Suicide Prevention Patrol and the autism support charity ASD Ireland. Members choose their causes democratically. "We vote," Mockett explained, describing how one event supports the top choice and a further event supports the runner-up. "It's all about keeping a balance, so everyone in the club has an opportunity."

Beyond the image

Member Gary Donnellan summed it up for the paper: "It shows we are not just big, hairy bikers and when people see us, they run away. We are friends, and if we can help people, we will help them."

Riders everywhere will recognize that. The look might be loud, but the heart is what holds a club together.
