Why Shipping Is Now $4.95 Under $40 (Blame the Post Office — 29 Rate Hikes Since We Opened)

We opened SkullJewelry.com in 2013 out of Highland, Utah, and for over a decade we shipped every order free — no minimums, no games. As of this month, orders under $40 carry a flat $4.95 shipping charge (orders $40+ still ship FREE). This post is the receipts on why — because you deserve the real story, and honestly, we want it documented.

What Just Happened in the Last 30 Days

Here's the part that finally broke us. A single small package — one ring in a box — going from our shop in Utah to the East Coast, to Hawaii, or to a rural town in Alabama cost us roughly $5 to ship not long ago. Today that same package runs over $8. That's not a typo and it's not us shopping for worse rates — it's what happened to USPS package pricing in 2026 alone:

  • January 2026: USPS raised its package rates — Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express — across the board.
  • April 2026: USPS added a temporary 8% "transportation" surcharge on top of those same package services. Yes — a surcharge on top of an increase.
  • July 2026: Another marketwide increase landed, this one bringing new handling fees and new dimensional-weight rules along for the ride.

Three package-price increases in seven months. And here's the part nobody tells you: USPS prices by distance zones, so those stacked increases hit the far zones hardest. Shipping from Utah, the East Coast is nearly as far as it gets, Hawaii is literally as far as it gets, and rural routes carry their own costs. Stack January + April + July on a far-zone package and $5 becomes $8. A 50%+ jump in what it costs us to mail you a ring — in months, not years.

The Long Version: It's Been Climbing Since the Day We Opened

We went and counted. Since we opened in 2013, USPS has pushed through roughly 29 separate nationwide price-increase events — regular annual hikes, mid-year hikes, package-rate hikes, and since 2020, a holiday surcharge every single peak season (that's right: shipping costs more during the exact months everyone ships).

The postage stamp tells the story in miniature. It's been raised 12 times since we opened — 46¢ then, 82¢ today. A 78% increase. And packages 1 ounce and up have had it even worse than letters: in a single day in January 2016, Priority Mail jumped 9.4% and Priority Mail Express jumped over 15%. Rate hikes used to come every few years; now they come like clockwork every January and July, with holiday surcharges in between.

What It Actually Costs to Ship Your Order

The $4.95 we now charge on small orders? Straight talk: it doesn't cover our cost. Here's what really goes out the door with every package:

  • The postage itself: $5.48 on a lucky nearby order, $8.40+ to Hawaii or the far zones — and climbing
  • The box, padding, and label stock — none of it free, all of it up with inflation
  • A real human pulling your ring, inspecting it, packing it right, and getting it to the Post Office before the 2pm cutoff so it ships the same day

All-in, a typical small order costs us $7–$10 to get to your door. So even at $4.95, we're still paying part of your shipping on every small order — we've just stopped pretending we can pay all of it. And on orders of $40 or more, we still eat every penny, gladly.

What We Did Instead of Raising Prices

Here's what we refused to do: quietly jack up every price in the store and keep advertising "free shipping" like plenty of stores do. You'd be paying for it either way — you just wouldn't see it. We'd rather show you the line item.

  • Orders $40 and over: SHIPPING IS FREE. Same as it's been for 13 years. We pay it.
  • Orders under $40: flat $4.95. No zone calculators, no surprise fees at checkout, no games. Less than it costs us.

And the honest pro move: most orders are one good piece away from $40 anyway. Add a second ring, grab something from the $20 and Under rack, hit $40 — and shipping's back on us, same as it ever was. More steel, zero shipping. Everybody wins except the Post Office.

Everything else stays exactly the same: solid 316L stainless steel, no cheap junk, same-day shipping from Highland, Utah on orders before 2pm, and a real human answering your emails.
