Edward Teach tied slow-burning fuses into his beard and lit them before boarding so he'd come over the rail wreathed in smoke. He didn't need to fight often. Most crews struck their colors the moment they saw him.

He was killed off North Carolina in 1718 — shot five times and cut twenty more before he went down.
