History of the Union Jack 🇬🇧
-
Origins:
The Union Jack, also called the Union Flag, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It was first created in 1606, when King James VI of Scotland also became King James I of England and Ireland, uniting the crowns. -
Design:
The flag combines three separate crosses that represent the countries within the UK:-
St. George’s Cross (red cross on white) – Patron saint of England.
-
St. Andrew’s Cross (white diagonal cross on blue) – Patron saint of Scotland.
-
St. Patrick’s Cross (red diagonal cross on white) – Patron saint of Ireland.
Together, they symbolize the union of nations under one kingdom.
