Dead reckoning is navigation without landmarks — you take your last known position, your speed, your heading, your time elapsed, and you calculate where you must be. It's an estimate. It's what every captain used before satellites, and it's how Benjamin Briggs was fixing his ship on the morning of 25 November 1872.

That was the final log entry. Nine days later the Mary Celeste was found sailing herself, six hundred miles off course, with nobody aboard.
